The History of Montepulciano

The first sure informations are dated 715 and some documents of 770 describe Montepulciano had own laws and the grape-growning was doing-well.
But it is in the Medieval period that Montepulciano alive the most intense activity. For its geographic position between Siena, Florence, Perugia and Orvieto and for its economic opulence,it was ever been contested.

So, in 1108, the Senesi besieged it and they conquered it. The cities of Orvieto and Perugia came in aid of Montepulciano very soon, and Montepulciano could turn back again free.
In 1202, Montepulciano swore fidelity to Florence, and in 1260, after the Battle of Montaperti Montepulciano falls under the dependency of Siena.
In the following 3 centuries, thestrife between Siena and Florence for Montepulciano is more and more complicated : in 1390 Montepulciano come back under the Florence orbit, but it is alone with the definitive fall of the Republic of Siena in 1555 that has the end of this long war for the dominion of Montepulciano.
