The Bravio of the barrel
is the manifestation that carries out to Montepulciano the last
Sunday of August.
It is a racing between the 8 contradas of the city, that are represented
from 2 pushers each one, and they compete to cover a predefined
distance of 2 kilometers to carry to the goal in little possible
time one barrels of 80 kg. The prize to the winning rione is exactly
the Bravio from the Latin Bravium that means prize, represented
from a painted cloth.
This tradition is of the end of the XIV, when it was a horses
race but it was suspended for reasons of public order. In 1974,
Don Marcello del Balio present again this manifestation, with
barrels and without horses, and now it represents without doubts
a promotional event of these territories.
The Bravio carries out in honor of the Saint Patrono of the city,
Saint Giovanni Decollato, and all the manifestation during 8 days
and contrade the participants are: Cagnano, Collazzi, Le Coste,
Gracciano, Poggiolo, Saint Donato, Talosa and Voltaia.
